Masters Swimming
20th Long Course Championships
held at the Joan Harrison Aquatic
Complex
in East London in the Eastern Cape province
from the 18th to the 20th of March 2004
419 Swimmers (205 women and 214 men) entered of whom
21 were foreign swimmers from Swaziland, Zimbabwe & Great Britain. 389 Swimmers competed.
There were 6 swimmers entered who were 80 years and older.
The oldest female swimmer was Nerina McAll 87.
The oldest male swimmer was Renato Salati 81.
318 Relay teams were entered.
For the first time ever in South Africa a relay team in the 320-359 age group was fielded. This was a mixed relay team from Coelacanth consisting of Pieter Verhoef (72), Paul Mulder (80), Greig Kothe (82) & Nerina McAll (87).
RECORDS
Women:
34 South African Individual Records were broken
plus
3 South African Individual Records were broken in the Dash-for-Cash events. (2 of them were improvements from the earlier 50m Freestyle event.)
In addition
6 second place and 2 third place finishers also bettered the previous SA Record (How's that for competition?)
and
3 SA Record times were bettered by a foreign swimmer.Bev McCarney missed the World Record in the 50m Backstroke (40-44) by 0.04 sec.
Edith Ottermann missed the World Record in the 50m Freestyle (Dash-for-Cash) by 0.41 sec.
MEN:
29 South African Individual Records were broken.
In addition
3 second place finishers also bettered the previous SA Record.Terry Downes missed the World Record in the 100m Freestyle (55-59) by 0.20 sec.
Terry Downes missed the World Record in the 200m Freestyle (55-59) by 1.85 sec.
Relays:
12 South African Records were broken.

In addition
2 second place finishing teams also bettered the previous SA Record.
COLOURS
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 80 times (49 by women & 31 by men) during the championships.
32 Swimmers (20 women & 12 men) who qualified throughout the season were awarded their Colours.
There were 2 qualifiers from previous years who were awarded their Colours because they had now fulfilled the remaining requirement of participating in 3 national championships.
A further 3 swimmers qualified on time but have yet to participate in 3 national championships.
