21st ("Coming of Age") Long Course Championships
held at the Delville Swimming
Complex
in Germiston in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng Province
from the 17th to the 19th of March 2005
464 Swimmers (237 women and 227 men) entered, of whom
17 were foreign swimmers from Zimbabwe (12), Swaziland (3), Great Britain (1) &
Australia (1).
426 Swimmers eventually competed.
There were 9 swimmers entered who were 80 years and older.
The oldest female swimmer was Nerina McAll (88).
The oldest male swimmer was Jack Brink (85).
326 Relay teams were entered.
The oldest relay team was a 320-359 age group mixed relay team from Coelacanth consisting of Pieter Verhoef (73), Paul Mulder (81), Greig
Kothe (83) & Nerina McAll (88).
RECORDS
Overall:
1 WORLD RECORD in the 200m Freestyle Relay for Women in the 200-239 age group was broken by the Cape Town team of Judy Brewis, Diane Coetzee, Cecilia Stanford and Sanderina Kruger. This record is subject to ratification by FINA.
South African Records were bettered 49 times in Individual events and 18 times in Relay events.
2 foreign swimmers swam faster than the SA Record in 7 events.
Women:
1 World record was broken (subject to ratification by FINA).

1 second place place finisher also bettered the previous SA Record
and
1 foreign swimmer swam faster than the SA Record in 3 events.
Edith Ottermann missed her own World Record in the 50m Freestyle (35-39) by 0.23 sec.
Sanderina Kruger missed her own World Record in the 100m Freestyle (55-59) by 0.83 sec.
Bev McCarney missed her own World Record in the 50m Backstroke (40-44) by 0.54 sec.
MEN:
19 South African Individual Records were broken
plus
1 South African Individual Record was broken in the Dash-for-Cash event.In addition
1 foreign swimmer swam faster than the SA Record in 4 events.
Tyrone Tozer missed Terry Downes' World Record in the 200m Freestyle (55-59) by 1.09 sec. with Terry in second place missing it by 1.23 sec.
Terry Downes missed the World Record in the 100m Freestyle (55-59) by 0.63 sec.
Relays:
13 South African Records were broken
plus
2 Inaugural South African Records were established.In addition
2 second place teams and 1 third place team also bettered the previous SA Record.
COLOURS
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 82 times (51 times by women & 31 times by men) during the championships.
40 Swimmers (22 women & 18 men) who qualified throughout the 2004/2005 season were awarded their Colours.
There were also 3 qualifiers from previous seasons who were awarded their Colours because either they had now fulfilled the remaining requirement of having participated in 3 national championships or they had qualified too late in the 2003/2004 season to be awarded their Colours at the 2004 Nationals.
A further 4 swimmers qualified on time in the 2004/2005 season but have yet to participate in 3 national championships.
