28th Long Course Championships
held at the University of the Western
Cape (UWC) Swimming
Pool in Bellville, Cape Town in the Western Cape
from the 14th to the 17th of March 2012.
The Open Water Championships were held at Blue Rock Dam on the 18th.
2062 entries were received from 406 swimmers (198 women and 208 men) from 22 clubs.
3 were foreign swimmers from Great Britain, Austria and Ukraine.
381 swimmers eventually competed.
371 swimmers scored points for their club in individual races.
309 relay teams were entered.
There were 12 swimmers entered who were 80 years and older.
The oldest female competitor was
Kascha Kloos (87).
The oldest male competitor was Ralph King (82).
RECORDS
In the Individual Events:
3 World Records were broken by 2 different
swimmers from the Cape Town club.
Tim Shead (200m Breaststroke & 200m
Backstroke) & Ryk Neethling (50m Butterfly).
64 South African
Records were broken by 31 different swimmers from 11 different
clubs.
9 second place finishers also bettered the previous record.
2 swimmers (Chris King and Tim Shead) broke SA records in all of their 6
permissible events.
In the Relay Events:
2 World Records were broken by
the Cape Town club.
Cape Town Mixed 4x100FS 200-239 (Edith Ottermann, Cecilia
Stanford, Nigel Hendricks & Tim Shead) &
Cape Town Mixed 4x100FS 100-119 (Thane
Williams, Bevin Reynolds, Tarryn Stanford & Ryk Neethling).
17 South African
Records were broken by 5 different clubs.
3 second or third place
relay teams also bettered the old South African Record.
COLOURS
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 75 times by 26 different South African Swimmers during the championships.
24 swimmers (15 women & 9 men) who qualified throughout the 2011/2012 season were awarded their Colours.
1 swimmer who had qualified on time in previous years and had now competed in her 3rd championships was awarded her Colours.
In addition there were 6 swimmers who qualified on time in the 2011/2012 season but have yet to fulfil the requirement of participation in 3 National Long Course Championships.
In Open Water 2 swimmers received Colours for the 2011/2012 season and 2 of the 4 swimmers who qualified in the 2010/2011 season were also awarded their badges. 1 swimmer qualified in the 2011/2012 season but has yet to participate in 3 National Championships.
