South African
Masters Swimming
30th Long Course Championships
held at the Stadium Swimming Complex in
Bloemfontein in the Free State
from the 12th to the 15th of March 2012.
The SAMS Open Water Championships were held at Maselspoort Resort on the 16th.
2115 entries were received from 401 swimmers (210 women and 191 men) from 21 clubs.
2 were foreign swimmers from Great Britain and Brazil.
381 swimmers eventually competed.
373 swimmers scored points for their club in individual races.
12 swimmers won all 6 of their individual events and scored 72 points for their clubs.
302 relay teams were entered.
There were 11 swimmers entered who were 80 years and older.
The oldest female competitor was
Christie du Plooy (83) from ET Stingrays MSC.
The oldest male competitor was Paul Mulder (90) from
Coelacanth MSC.
In the Open Water events 171 swimmers entered and 137 finally competed.

SAMS Record.
Sue Leuner broke the SAMS
Record in all 6 of her individual events.

In the Relay Events:

Masters Swimming Records were broken or established by

3 second or third place finishing teams
also bettered the previous SAMS Record.
COLOURS
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 40 times by 20 different South African Swimmers during the championships.
Sanderina Kruger bettered the SAMS Colours qualifying time in all 6 of her individual events.24 swimmers (15 women & 9 men) who qualified throughout the 2013/2014 season were awarded their SAMS Colours.
1 additional swimmer who had qualified on time in a previous year and had now competed in his 3rd championships was awarded his SAMS Colours for the year in which he qualified.
In addition there were 2 swimmers who qualified on time in the 2013/2014 season but have yet to fulfil the requirement of participation in 3 SAMS National Long Course Championships.
In the 3Km Open Water event on Sunday an additional 2 swimmers (both women) achieved SAMS Colours qualifying times.
