South African
Masters Swimming
35th Long Course Championships
held at the Newton Park Swimming Pool
in Port Elizabeth
in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality area of the
Eastern Cape Province
from the 20th to the 23rd of March 2019.
The SAMS Open Water Championships were held
at the Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay on the 20th.
Results
2292 entries for individual events were received from 446 swimmers (229 women and 217 men) from 23 clubs.
9 swimmers were from foreign countries - Germany (1), Tenerife (1), Botswana (2) & Namibia (5).
425 swimmers eventually competed.
404 swimmers scored points for their club in individual races.
12 swimmers won all 6 of their individual events.
367 relay teams were entered.
There were 170 swimmers entered who were
60 years and older.
68 of them were 70 years and
older.
9 of them were 80 years and
older.
The oldest female competing was
Wendy Saunders (84) from Synergy MSC.
The oldest male competing was Ted Beukes (89) from
Coelacanth MSC.
In the Open Water events 227 swimmers entered and 200 swimmers competed.
RECORDS
FINA Records:
3 (4) FINA World Masters Swimming Records (one of them twice) were broken by Sanderina Kruger (70) of the Cape Town MSC in the 50, 100 & 200m Freestyle.
1 FINA World
Masters Swimming Record was broken by the Mixed 240-279 Cape
Town MSC team consisting of
Andre Steynberg, Graham du Toit, Cecilia Stanford
& Di Coetzee in the 4x100m Medley Relay.
SAMS Records:
Individual:
33 South African
Masters Swimming Records (plus 2 in
the Dash-for-Cash) were broken or established by
14 different swimmers from
8 different
clubs.
Plus
4 second place finishers also bettered the previous
SAMS Record.
Relays:
6 South African
Masters Swimming Records were broken or established by
3 different Clubs.
Plus
3 (a 2nd, a 3rd and a 4th place) finishing teams
also bettered the previous SAMS Record.
COLOURS
POOL:
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 70 times by 30 SAMS Swimmers (19women & 11 men) during the championships.
32 swimmers (21 women & 11 men) who qualified throughout the 2018/2019 season were awarded their SAMS Colours.
In addition there were 5 swimmers who qualified on time in the 2018/2019 season but have yet to fulfil the requirement of participation in 3 SAMS National Long Course Championships.
OPEN WATER:
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered by 14 SAMS Swimmers at the Open Water event.
8 swimmers (7 women & 1 man) who qualified throughout the 2018/2019 season were awarded their SAMS Colours.
In addition there was 1 swimmer who qualified on time in the 2018/2019 season but has yet to fulfil the requirement of participation in 3 SAMS National Long Course Championships.
