Masters Swimming
36th Long Course Championships
held at the Delville Swimming Pool in
Germiston
in the Ukurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality area of Eastern Gauteng
from the 11th to the 14th of March 2020.
The SAMS Open Water Championships were held
at the Homestead Dam in Benoni on the 15th.
Results
2117 entries for individual events were received from 407 swimmers (213 women and 194 men) from 21 clubs.
1 swimmer was from a foreign country - Namibia.
371 swimmers eventually competed.
362 swimmers scored points for their club in individual races.
8 swimmers won all 6 of their individual events.
305 relay teams were entered.
There were 5 swimmers entered who were younger than 25 years.
There were 153 swimmers entered who were
60 years and older.
64 of them were 70 years and
older.
15 of them were 80 years and
older.
The oldest female competing was
Wendy Saunders (85) from Synergy MSC.
The oldest male competing was Richard Hills (88) from
PE Masters Aquatics.
In the Open Water events 153 swimmers entered and 101 swimmers competed.

SAMS Records:
Individual:
23 South African
Masters Swimming Records (plus 2 in
the Breaststroke Dash-for-Cash) were broken or established by
13 different swimmers from
6 different
clubs.
Relays:
3 South African
Masters Swimming Records were broken or established by
3 different Clubs.
Plus
2 (a 2nd, and a 3rd place finishing) teams
also bettered the previous SAMS Record.
COLOURS
POOL:
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 46 times by 18 SAMS Swimmers (13 women & 5 men) during the championships.
In all 30 swimmers (18 women & 12 men) who qualified throughout the 2019/2020 season were awarded their SAMS Colours.
OPEN WATER:
A South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying time was bettered by 1 SAMS Swimmer at the Open Water event.
8 swimmers (5 women & 3 men) who qualified throughout the 2019/2020 season were awarded their SAMS Colours.
